NOTES: The cabochon cut (like a little dome) is for me the epitome of antique cuts for gemstones. The first faceting of stones began around the 1300’s. Gem cutting was done by hand during this time and almost all of the gemstones seen in jewelry prior to the 16th century were shaped and polished into cabochons. Ruby cabochons have been used in the crowns and jewelry of kings and noblemen since they were first discovered. This wine red gemstone of love and desire have been treasured for thousands of years.
